Welcome back to our "Did You Know?" series, where we uncover fascinating details about famous literary figures and their works. Today, we dive into the remarkable friendship between two of the greatest fantasy writers of the 20th century, C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien.

Shared Passions and Professions C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien first met in 1926 at Oxford University, where they were both professors. They bonded over their shared interest in languages, mythology, and literature. This mutual passion laid the foundation for a friendship that would significantly influence their respective writing careers.

The Inklings Lewis and Tolkien were key members of the Inklings, an informal literary discussion group that met in Oxford during the 1930s and 1940s. The group provided a supportive space where members read and critiqued each other’s work. Many of Tolkien’s early manuscripts of what would become "The Lord of the Rings" were first read aloud in these meetings.

Mutual Influences Lewis famously encouraged Tolkien to continue his work on "The Lord of the Rings" during times of doubt. Without Lewis's support, Tolkien may never have completed his epic trilogy. On the other hand, Tolkien's deep understanding of myth and language influenced Lewis’s own writings, notably his series "The Chronicles of Narnia."

Religious Conversations Their relationship was also marked by deep religious discussions, which had a profound impact on their lives and writings. Tolkien, a devout Catholic, played a pivotal role in Lewis’s conversion from atheism to Christianity, which subsequently infused Christian themes into Lewis’s literary works.

Lasting Legacy Despite some differences and estrangements over the years, the friendship between Lewis and Tolkien remained a significant chapter in literary history. Their collaborative spirit and individual genius not only produced some of the most beloved literature of their time but also inspired countless other writers and artists across generations.
